Guide · How-to

How to run a tool inside a session and work with your data in place.

In short

From a running session, launch the app you need, point it at your workspace data, and work in place. Results stay in the workspace.

Before you start

Apps run inside a session, so open a session in your workspace first - see Open a session.

Launch an app

  1. Open your session

From your workspace, open a running session - or start one. A new session opens empty.

  2. Find the app

Browse the App Store for the tool you need. Each entry shows what the tool is and what it requires to run.

  3. Choose a version

Where more than one version is available, pick the one you want. If you are continuing earlier work, use the version it was done with.

  4. Launch it

The app starts inside the session and opens as a window in your browser.

  5. Work on your data

The workspace's data is available to the app at a standard location, so you can open it directly rather than uploading anything.

Running more than one

You can run several apps in the same session at once - a notebook beside an editor, or two notebooks on the same data. Each opens as its own window.

Each running app claims its share of the session's resources, so a session with several heavy tools open will feel slower than one with a single tool. Close what you are not using.

If an app will not start

The usual cause is resources: the app asks for more than is currently free on the instance, and it waits rather than failing. Closing tools you are not using, or trying again when the platform is quieter, generally resolves it.

If a tool you need is not in the catalogue at all, see The App Store.

Getting results out

Outputs leave the platform only through a controlled export, with review and authorisation - so sensitive data cannot leave by accident. Save results into the workspace as you work, then request the export. See Exporting results.
